5 out of 5 stars All my media Digital now   September 9, 2010
Paul
I don't normally write a review, but after reading some inaccurate 1 star reviews here I wanted to redress the balance a little.

I waited until the price was good before jumping into the ereader market - and the 3rd Generation Kindle crossed that line.
I am normally careful about buying anything and so did my research, comparing many (there are at least a dozen types, each with pros and cons) ereaders, before choosing the kindle.

I was aware of the time it would take to be delivered (I ordered it on August 7th) given it was only being released on the 27th, and that I was an international purchaser. I also purchased the Australian adapter plug and case (sans light).

I have to say that so far I am extremely happy with my purchase - The delivery service was excellent when it finally got shipped, and my Kindle arrived with no rattling and in pristine condition. I have no troubles with the small keyboard and use of alt keys to get numbers (good way to minimise space and maximise screen size). I did as the quick guide said and charged it for three hours. It connected immediately to the 3G network and downloaded books in my archive quickly and with no problems. I checked the experimental web browsing after the three hours with no issues (not its primary function, so I was aware it was slightly (and only slightly) slow). People on this forum must have super fast internet connections or Australia is lagging (sic) behind.

I've been reading every day since with no problems - The screen is fantastic and has to be seen to be believed. It truly does make a difference and looks very much like paper (or like the picture on the protective cover you have to rip off when you first get a gadget). The menus are well presented and if you are even slight computer savvy you will be able to navigate like a pro. Its been 6 days now and I've used 50% of the charge - not bad considering internet usage every day and indexing 80+ books. I would expect at least another weeks usage..., so pretty much on par with a months usage per charge.

I've since tested the wifi and found it connects with no issues and automatically detects.

So no problems and an excellent experience from Amazon - Hopefully I don't develop any and from what I've seen, I doubt it.

5 stars Kindle and Amazon - keep up the good work...

5 out of 5 stars I was skeptical   September 9, 2010

Before I had seen the 3rd gen Kindle, I had never seen the e-ink display technology. I was skeptical. The price point was right, so I bought it.

I will never read a paper book again, unless it is essential, and unavailable on the Kindle. The text is so clear, and the size is adjustable. I'm not old, but the small print, and cheap paper of most books will strain my eyes. The Kindle makes everything so clear and wonderful.

I was born in the 70's. I was raised on electronics and their displays. Most of you were too. I can't stress enough how different this is from a regular display. What you see on the Amazon web page can't do justice to what you get. It's like the ads for HD TV in standard definition.

I'm sure that, with the huge demand, there will be DOA units. That's the nature of electronics. I hope Amazon deals with these inevitable issues well.

I love my Kindle, I've already read two books on it, in three days. There are negatives to the Kindle. If you like to show off the things that you read, it will be difficult. If you like to have important, unread, books on your shelves, the Kindle will do you no good. If you want to read for yourself, the Kindle is the perfect choice.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst :(   September 9, 2010

I really wanted to love this. Ever since e-readers came out, I put it in my heart to get a Kindle. I purchased my Kindle 3 and used it for 2 week with nothing but endless frustration, THE WORST.

First off, the buttons feel super cheapy to me. I felt like I stepped back in time and was using a device from 10 years ago. Come on now, my 10$ calculator has better buttons then this thing. I was really shocked by this, and expected quality and didn't get it. Because of these cheap buttons, it's IMPOSSIBLE to operate in all manors. The buttons are so small (and I have tiny hands) that I had a heck of time trying to navigate it. I can't even see the buttons most of the time(same color buttons against same background) and was straining my eye. I do not have bad eyesight at all, yet I struggle with these buttons. Navigating was a total nightmare. When using the directional pad I kept hitting other buttons, and it was so darn frustrating. My hubby played with it (he loves all sorts of gadgets) and he has big fingers. He gave up after just a few minutes and didn't give it another look.

The text to speech is horrific. All the sentences just run together, and I can not understand any of it. It's beyond horrible, and a totally useless feature. Someone at Kindle dropped the ball big time rushing out this feature.

There is no Epub support - enough said there.

It's was also constantly dropping my home Wifi signal, and I have other electronics working off it with no problems. I just can't figure out why I can't hook to my own home Wifi anymore (it only worked once). I never had this problem with any other Wifi device in my home before. I'm very computer savvy, and I know what I'm doing - this thing had me baffled.

After many days of frustration, giving this thing chance after chance ....I then had constant rebooting. The unit goes haywire at unexpected times. No one seems to be able to figure out what is wrong with my unit, and I have spent many hours on the phone with tech support - no answers. I asked a friend that owns one and he said his does the same sometimes too, and it's just how it is - WHAT!!! I don't think so lol.

I gave up (Sorry Kindle lovers). I have never ever been so frustrated with an electronic device like this before. I did not bother to exchange it. A new unit will not solve my disappointment in the buttons and navigation.

I returned mine, and since purchased a Nook. I didn't have my hopes up, since Kindle taught me not to get too excited about e-readers. Well let me say I LOVE my Nook. The Nook is beyond amazing. It blows the Kindle away in so many aspects I lost count. The touchscreen is so amazing, and I'm now zipping threw the basic operations of the unit (unlike the Kindle). There isn't even a comparison as far as I'm concerned. I can not believe people even compare these two. I wasted so much time comparing the two and now owning both I see how I wasted my time. I Wish I had went with the Nook first, and saved myself all the frustration.

On my Nook I'm now downloading epub books, hooking to my home wifi seamlessly, shopping for books and navigating the system in FULL COLOR on an easy to read back lit touchscreen, customizing my screen savers and home page, lending books out with other friends who own one, reading books in store for free. A-MAZING! It's also so beautiful to look at as well, so esthetically pleasing (so unlike the Kindle).

The color touchscreen of my Nook alone kills the Kindle in every way. My hubby played with it, and now he's sneaking using it. He also admitted today that he wants a Nook of his own now. He usually is the objective one, and gives everything a chance, and he was the first to call the Kindle junk.

AND the funny part is my friend that had his Kindle, that told me it's normal for it to freak out sometimes, saw my Nook and played with it for several days. Without thinking twice, he handed his Kindle 3 to his younger brother and bought a Nook. I went into this not being bias to either unit, or actually loving the idea of the Kindle. All I wanted was a nicely functioning e-reader, and I finally got one in the Nook.

(Side note: I have read many reviews here, and I noticed that Kindle lovers literally attack ever person that gives this unit a bad review. Please don't bother, as I will just ignore this needless attacking. This is my opinion and I'm aloud to have it. Sorry for this harsh reaction, but I was applaud at the behavior in responses I saw to 1 star reviews).

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!   September 9, 2010

I have had the Kindle 3 for about a week now and it's fabulous. So easy to use, comfortable to hold, light as a feather, screen is easy on the eyes. And the price can't be beat when you compare to other e-reader devices. And free 3G to boot! Could not be happier!!! If you love to read get the Kindle 3, you will not be sorry!

1 out of 5 stars If it worked, it would be my favorite   September 9, 2010

I'm on my third K3. I had a K1, never got around to getting a K2, and was delighted to order a K3.

The form factor is excellent - small, light, the contrast is gorgeous, they finally have reasonable storage.

However, the first one crashed and froze and crashed and froze until it turned itslf off, although fully charged, and won't turn on again. Replacement #1 has strobe effect - it sort of stalls out and blinks rapidly. Replacement #2 freezes and restarts every time I try to turn the page. On each restart it has a different number of items listed. Sometimes it restarts just sitting there. So 3 out of 3 have been bad. This is the first day I've had #3, and the battery has gone from fully charged to 30% in 5 hours, wireless off.

Amazon now says it's a software issue, which absolutely makes sense, but it's hard for me to understand how issues of this kind got missed on testing. This isn't (or shouldn't be) new to Amazon. I expected issues like this with the K1, because that really was early adoption, but that thing just soldiers on, short battery life, dinky memory and all - at least it *works*.

So now, per support, all I can do wait and see if the update they're pushing in the next week will resolve all this stuff, and dread whatever new problems the update will bring.

At this point, the bloom is very definitely off the rose, and I'm not throwing away the box the latest K3 arrived in, because right now, I don't believe Amazon can make this right. I very much regret how much of my content is tied to Amazon's proprietary format, and the only reason I'm waiting this out is because I've got 2 years of purchases in the Amazon format that I don't want to walk away from, but I'm getting there. The longer this goes on, the closer I am to throwing in the towel with Amazon.

It's a lovely little device to hold and look at, but none of the ones Amazon has sent me work, so be very sure that you're willing to invest hours in calls and emails to support with no substantive result before you buy.

The folks at Kindle Support are being sweet, but honestly? I got the first K3 less than a week ago.
