5 out of 5 stars Great Product plus Support   September 7, 2010
Thomas (Merrimac, Morocco)
The new Kindle screen contrast is fantastic for reading. The whole operation for downloading books is so easy and hassle free it is almost addicting. The customer support is remarkable. I left my kindle in our van over the weekend and when I went to use it the screen had lines ( might have gotten too hot )running through it. I called customer support and they shipped out a new kindle, next day ship at no charge. How cool is that.

5 out of 5 stars KINDLE DX IN AFRICA   September 7, 2010
DANIEL (SOUTH AFRICA)
I HAD DOUBTS AS TO WHETHER I WOULD REALLY BE ABLE TO USE THIS DEVICE FULLY - I LIVE IN A SMALLLL TOWN IN RURAL SOUTH AFRICA WHERE CELLULAR SIGNAL STRENGTH SOMETIMES IS DODGY OR WEAK AND INTERMITTANT . BUT ALL FOR NAUGHT ! MY KINDLE DX WORKED PERFECTLY AND WHOLE BOOKS WERE DOWNLOADED WIRELESSLY IN THIRTY SECONDS . MY KINDLE THEN DEVELOPED A PROBLEM AND IN LESS THAN THREE MINUTES ON THE PHONE AMAZON OFFERED A REPLACEMENT -WHAT INCREDIBLE SERVICE !

5 out of 5 stars So easy on the eyes   September 7, 2010

I had read a lot about the debate between e-ink and tablet computers.
When I got my kindle all debates were put to rest. My kindle is so easy on my eyes as compared to my laptop (don't own a tablet yet).

Thanks Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Great product, but could definitely be improved.   September 6, 2010

I know the Kindle has many reviews already, but maybe somebody considering the purchase will find this review helpful.

I have had the Kindle DX for about 3 weeks now and definitely do not regret the purchase.

Pros:
1) The screen is easy to read and the larger size means less page turning with books, and less scrolling with PDF's and newspapers. (My sister has the smaller version, she prefers it because it fits in her purse, but I appreciate the extra size - the DX is still very thin and light)
2) The battery holds its charge for a long time, even longer for me than advertised. I turn the wireless off between downloads and have read four novels without recharging the battery yet.
3) No monthly charges, so it does not matter if I use it everyday, or just for vacations. If you are just reading books, this seems like a better choice than buying the iPAD and using its Kindle Ap, as you will have to pay monthly for the 3G with the iPAD.
4) My wife and I can use two kindles on the same account (though her's is currently back-ordered) When her kindle comes, we will be able to both read the same newly released best-seller at the same time, without having to buy it twice in hardcover. (We fight over the Michael Connelly's)

Cons:
1) A bunch of books I want to read are not available. Particularly books that have been published between 40 and 10 years ago. If the copyright has expired, you're fine. If it is new, you're fine. But in between is dicey.
2) Using the Kindle store with the kindle is slow and cumbersome. It is OK if you know what book you want, but not good for browsing.
3) The battery is not removable. Every electronic product I have every owned with a rechargeable battery has outlasted the battery itself.
4) The case seems cheap, and as soon as I attached the leather cover, the front and the back plastic plates started to bend and separate where the metal clasps of the cover attach. I have only had it 3 weeks, and now the cover will randomly fall off.

3 out of 5 stars Needs improvements for the visually impaired   September 6, 2010

We recently purchased a kindle, it is a very useful product.

However, we suggest the following to improve the product.

People with poor eyesight need the following in order to facilitate or just use the kindle.

1. Larger font size options

2. Have menus display in larger fonts

3. have text to speech be able to read menus , article headlines and titles, and help in selecting them.
