Worked for an hourSeptember 8, 2010 Mr. Salty(Northern Illinois, U.S.A.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Kindle 3 is my first e-reader, so I was really looking forward to playing with this new bit of technology. I already ordered several books and was eager to start reading when the Kindle arrived this afternoon. After fully charging it, the Kindle lasted all of an hour before it decided to reset itself. It's been locked in a constant loop of resets ever since. About every 10 minutes it will actually reach the main screen, but when you slide the power button to wake it, it just starts resetting itself again. I'll call customer service in the morning, but I can't say I'm impressed so far.
I love my Kindle!September 8, 2010 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have the Kindle 2. I looked at it for a year before I took the big step. I am so glad I finally got it. I have a case that holds my Id, credit cards, kindle charger, screen wipe and my kindle and never leave home without it! I live for Dr's waiting rooms just so I can read. I even bought the waterproof cover so I can read in the pool. I have been playing with the idea of getting one for my daughters, but think I will keep my Kindle 2 and give them the new one. The free books are an added plus. Its not the apple thing but If you love books and like learning new words and having easy access to the internet links this is the perfect thing for you. I have been able to download books from everyplace I have been. I only wish I had more time to read! THANK YOU AMAZON....
Class act!September 8, 2010 Jon Almada(Shingle Springs, CA USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
What can I say? Amazon did a great job with this. I opened the box to discover a thin and very sturdy reader in my grasp. Upon turning it on, I smiled as it said "Jon's Kindle" in the upper corner and was taken through a nice intro screen and shown the ropes right off the bat!
Menus are super easy to figure out and the text to speech is awesome. I do wish they had a female voice to do the reading but I'm being picky. The voice it has is perfectly clear and very understandable.
Downloading books is a breeze and I'm enjoying several titles now and will be definitely making this a primary tool for my reading from now on.
I never thought I'd own a Kindle, but now that I took the plunge and went for the Wifi and 3g model, I'll never go back!
Only advice I have; Buy the protective case when you order yours - I didn't and realized right off the bat I'd need one - Just ordered mine.
Five stars - Amazon hit one out of the park with this latest generation model ;>)
fine-tuned to excellenceSeptember 8, 2010 M. Carr(Indiana) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I will keep it simple. I bought this kindle for my wife, she is a big reader, but after using it for a while it actually makes me want to read more. I used to own a kindle 2, and still own a Sony Daily Reader. The Kindle 3 is by far my favorite so far.
Pros:
1. extremely long battery life even with wifi and 3g on all the time (at least 2 weeks with about 4 hours daily use reading)
2. MUCH faster page turns... this is astonishingly noticeable right away from all my old e-readers.
3. MUCH better contrast ratio for an unparalleled level of detail... black and white photos appear real, no penned.
4. option to configure wireless manually or through an aided setup (I prefer manual control of these things)
5. The 5-way button is much better than the previous kindle's button
6. The back of the kindle's rubberized texture is a dream to hold... like a semi-soft finish without that sticky rubber feel.
7. the keyboard now has rubberized buttons of the same type as the back skin, and have a wonderful tactile feedback and simple click when depressed
8. menus seem simplified and somewhat easier to navigate
9. forward and backward buttons on both sides of the kindle!
10. more storage built in
Cons:
1. the smaller size of the unit (the screen is the same size), actually seems too small on initial feel, but I can see getting used to it
2. still no slot of adding external storage (i.e. SD card slot, etc.)
I have only had the new kindle for a few days and am still reviewing it. I will update my review if any more positives or negatives can be found. As of now though, I really appreciate all the tweaks Amazon has done to the new kindle to further improve on a wonderful device.
If you don't have a kindle... this is of course the one to buy. If you already have a kindle 2... well then maybe I would hold off. Nothing earth shattering changed here, but like my title says they have fine-tuned the current format to excellence!
SURPRISINGLY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE!September 8, 2010 DISAPPOINTED 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased the Kindly 3. Excitedly, I ordered it a month in advance and it finally arrived on Aug. 31st. I previously owned the kindle 2, and the Kindly 3 is a nice improvement. The smaller form factor, the snappier page turns and the improved contrast are all touted features, and they are all true.
Unfortunately, after a few days of playing with the kindle 3, downloading a couple of books, and reading, it began resetting itself every 5 minutes. The battery would run down in less than 12 hours (likely due to the frequent resets), and more importantly, it was really annoying to be abruptly stopped mid sentence, when the kindle decided to reset itself.
I called customer service The first person I spoke to, transferred me to a "kindle specialist" after hearing the problem. The specialist stated that he wanted me to plug in my kindle into the wall outlet, and he would update it overnight, to correct the resetting issue. He also stated he would call me at 7 PM the next day. At 745 PM, the next day, I had not received a phone call. Thus, I called kindle support, and again the first person I spoke to, transferred me to another "kindle specialist" after placing me on hold for 10 minutes. The next kindle specialist stated that the update was not done the night before, but would be done the following night. He had no explanation as to why the first specialist did not contact me as he stated he would. Thus, after 2 days of awaiting the wireless update which would solve the problem of the kindle resetting every 5 minutes, the update was complete, and the the kindle 3 continued to reset it self. So, again, another missed follow up by kindle support, who stated they would call me back the next day, and to no avail, no follow up. Thus, again, for the 3rd day in a row, I called kindle support, let history repeat itself, and was transferred to yet another kindle specialist. He stated that a few kindles were reported to have the same problem. Whereas, some (on this forum) were replaced, they were unwilling to replace my kindle until I suffered through yet another update. I was to wait yet, another day, until they sent another wireless update, and see if it solved the problem. I will know the results tomorrow.
What a true disappointment. For a company that prides itself on great customer service, this has been an eye opening experience. I hope that my kindle is fixed by tomorrow, and if not, I hope that Amazon.com has the decency to replace it. Up until now, this has been a terrible customer experience. I just wanted to share my story with you all, and let you know that if your kindle is resetting itself, it is a real problem which the engineers have acknowledged, and you should call customer support and ask for a replacement, and not let them keep telling you that you will need an update. Maybe, the next update will work for me, but 50 hours later, 3 phone calls later, 2 missed follow-ups later, and 6 customer support individuals later and I still have a kindle 3 that is at this point non-functional. Maybe, just maybe, if I wait, 1 day later, it will suddenly work!
